** Sponsored DNA Test being offered **
The Richmond DNA Project is looking for descendants of:
Caleb Hazard RICHMOND (JBR3049) b 1 Jan 1805, Newport, RI, m Mary Randolph DODSON
and/or his father
Nathaniel RICHMOND (JBR1154) b Dec 1768, Newport, RI, m Mary HAZARD
We have a participant whose line comes down through John RICHMOND's (JBR1) son Edward (JBR3) and his son Silvester (JBR23).
His DNA results indicate that he is unrelated (genetically) to the others who have tested as descendants of John (JBR1).
Professionally checked, he is quite confident of his research up until Caleb - after that he relies heavily on JBR's book - as many of you know JBR's book is not always 100% accurate and does contain errors. It could be that this "K2" haplotype of his, comes from a different Richmond line. It is also possible, that somewhere between Edward (JBR3) and Caleb there is what the DNA community calls a "non-paternal event".
The following explanation of a "Non-paternal Event" comes from WorldFamilies.net:
--------------------------------------------------------------
Quote:
There are several scenarios that fit into the category of a non-paternity event.
* One, of course, is infidelity, but this may not be the most common
* Another common event was the unrecorded adoption. As there were many adult deaths on the frontier, children were frequently raised by relatives or friends, with the adoptive parents giving the child their own last name.
* Another occurrence that fits into this category is the unrecorded name change - which causes the same confusion
Where infidelities or adoptions have long been rumored and now proven, there can be some satisfaction. Where an infidelity or adoption occurred in a well-documented family, identifying it helps in clarifying the DNA profile of descendants. Where the non-paternity event occurs in a family without extensive documentation, it can be very disruptive and prevent the participant from obtaining matches within the surname.
---------------------------------------------------------------
A DNA test from a second descendant of this line could help point us in the right direction. Depending on what the new results show, we should be able to tell if the split comes above or below the common ancestor. The other possibility is that Joshua Bailey Richmond just "got it wrong" concerning this branch, and that these RICHMOND's come from a line other than Taunton, Mass.
Obviously this individual would like to get to the bottom of this.
Our participant is willing to sponsor and pay for a male descendant of Caleb or his father Nathaniel, to be tested and become part of the Richmond DNA Project. Contact the
